This time, I’ve taken a step back from the spectacle to look at what these couture creations mean for the rest of us (and our wardrobes) this season and next. What struck me most was the consistency across collections: there was a romantic thread woven through everything I saw. Whether it was a colour, a texture, or a silhouette, the mood was decidedly pretty and poetic.

Of course, most of us (sadly) aren’t walking around in hand-pleated tulle gowns or crystal-encrusted capes, but when you strip back the theatrics, there’s plenty of inspiration to take from the looks on show. So, I distilled the key fashion trends spotted during Couture Fashion Week in Paris this July down to their most wearable, real-life forms to bring you the moments that felt just as relevant off the runway as they did on it.

There’s something irresistibly timeless about polkadots and, this week, they were everywhere, from column gowns to coats. This is proof that one of summer's biggest trends is set to feel just as relevant come autumn. Whether scaled up or kept classic in black and white, they added a playful feel to what can be a serious fashion line up.

2. Bows

Instead of overpowering a look, bows were used in a considered way this Couture Fashion week, adorning shoulders, bustiers and lapels to make everything from already swoon-worthy dresses even more fairytale-like and bestowing suiting with a softened touch.

3. Pearls

Pearls were woven into looks in the most unexpected, beautiful ways this season. Gold had a major moment in Paris this week—not just as an accent, but as a full-look statement. Shimmering lamé, liquid silks and rich embellishments created a sense of opulence that felt right at home in the couture setting. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to integrate it into your own wardrobe that don't feel frivolous or too precious.

Chanel gave the gold minidress a fresh feel by pairing it with some over-the-knee boots. Masterful.

Still, our penchant for exposing a glimpse of our body under airy translucent fabric isn’t about being risqué. Instead, it’s about selectively revealing elements of ourselves that often go unnoticed. It’s this act that brings us to the accessory du jour: mesh bags.

Perhaps the most intimate style we’ve seen this year, the best mesh bags have emerged as an unexpected alternative to the sturdier woven leather shoppers, suede carry-alls and studded top handles that designers have been peddling over the last few months.

Blame it on the ability warm weather has in helping us shed layers or the air of voyeurism that’s in the air, the mesh bag trend has arrived to unlock the inner exhibitionist inside us all. We’re no longer curious to know what chic women carry through town; we’re becoming these people ourselves, proudly displaying to the world the lip liners, keyring charms and other elegant staples that serve us throughout our day. Because the items we tote around not only hold significance, but hold our secrets too.

Are Mesh Bags in Style?

“Mesh brings a certain intrigue,” explains Jane Frances, creative director and co-founder of Dear Frances. The London-based luxury label focuses on footwear and accessories that enhance off-duty outfits with polish, elegance and minimalism. Known for their sock-esque cult ballet flat, I caught up with Frances off the back of their brick-and-mortar launch into Selfridges to understand just why the see-through look is so in demand.

“The idea that a handbag, used to house and protect our valuable everyday essentials, can be reworked to subtly reveal is unexpected,” she adds, noting why they're back in style. “There's a vulnerability to it which is honest, fresh and exciting.”

Of course, mesh is a fabric that has been employed in accessory design for years—it’s the backbone for the functional packing cubes that go inside your Rimowa carry-on luggage or make up the checked laundry bag that you schlep to and from your local dry cleaner. Despite these associations, they’ve been given a luxury makeover. Dear Frances has just launched their first mesh bag called the Sacchetto.

It’s a slouchy and sophisticated long-line shoulder bag made from fine Italian fabric and finished with soft nappa leather. Don’t let the fragility and daintiness fool you, however, the structure of these bags makes them dependable enough to fit your laptop, beach read and grocery haul alike.

According to Frances, mesh bags make such a versatile style as they “go against the obvious”. According to her, the trend “adds a certain considered depth with its unique texture and displays a confidence of the wearer.”

Alongside Dear Frances, The Row’s woven-mesh barn tote is an iteration that’s also leading the charge. The Jenner sisters both featured the striped style as part of their European Summer holiday wardrobes—Kylie wore it with white capri pants when gallivanting around Venice, while Kendall took a more languid approach by pairing it with Ancient Greek Sandals’s saionara jelly flip-flops when in St. Tropez—though local members of the fashion influencer set like Monikh Dale and Marianne Smyth have posted the piece, too.

The trend has also begun cropping up at Longchamp, Proenza Schouler and Alaïa, meaning that there are plenty of contenders for the best mesh bag crown already available. That’s not exempting the expensive-looking high-street versions, either, with brands like COS and Massimo Dutti designing their own versions that rival its opulent counterparts.

“Mesh requires intentional consideration,” Frances reminds me, though. Styling wise, play of other textures, like structured denim or silk trousers, to give a more impactful look. And always remember, the best mesh bags will make the contents of whatever’s stored inside visible, so perhaps in a little pouch for your most personal items. Another reason why it’s a worthy investment? “It pushes the boundaries of comfort and style, never compromising one for the other.” Sure, you’ll have to constantly clean out the receipts and junk that end up littered at the bottom of your other luxury bags, but the payoff will be well worth it.

I would know. There have been times when I've been the woman who has everything, and other instances when I've been the person who carries nothing except the clothes on her back. Can you tell me what your perfect summer’s day looks like?
I’m such a summer person—it's my favourite season. I just got back from Mallorca with my boyfriend where we had the perfect slow summer days. We woke up early, had breakfast outside in the sun and drove to the beach where we spent the day reading, tanning and swimming, finished by eating my favourite summer dish, paella, in the evening. Ideally, I'm wearing something breezy like a linen maxi skirt, with a blouse over my bikini and a hat to block the sun.

What recipes do you turn to once the weather warms?
I’m obsessed with açaí bowls. They're fresh, healthy and cold; perfect on warm summer days. The best I've ever had was in Brazil, but I like to make them myself at home, topping them off with strawberries, blueberries, banana, granola and almond paste.

Where will you be spending your summer?
I always love visiting the Spanish Islands like Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. There's something special about driving around, discovering tiny, beautiful beaches, and there's no better place to watch the sun set than on an island.

What's on your summer reading list?
I’m currently reading Citroeninkt, a beautiful autobiographical book by Maral Noshad Sharifi. The book tells the story of Talar, who flees from Iran to Moerkapelle with her mother. Also on my list is Intermezzo by Sally Rooney.

Which films, TV shows or other cultural moments sum up summer for you?
My favourite summer movie is Vicky Cristina Barcelona, about two best friends on a summer holiday in Barcelona, where they meet an artist, Juan Antonio, who is attracted to both of them, but also can’t let go of his mentally and emotionally unstable ex-wife, Maria Elena. I recommend!

Do you have any summer memories that you find yourself returning to each year?
Last summer was a special one where we celebrated the bachelorette of my best friend Benthe with all of our friends on Ibiza. Cliché, but we laughed and cried and summered like we had never summered before.

Do you have any summer traditions you do each year to mark the season’s arrival?
The first day it’s warm enough to have a BBQ at the park, I’ll always have one with my sister and our boyfriends. Another thing I always do is a boat day with my best friends on the canals of Amsterdam.

What scent do you most associate with summer?
Any smell of flowers.

I love watching movies between 2002-2008 when it’s summer—I love a feel-good movie like The Proposal. I've also been enjoying re-watching Sex and the City, followed by some good Netflix documentaries.

Do you have any summer memories that you find yourself returning to each year?
I grew up going to the Lake District with my family every summer, and I still enjoy doing this each summer, whether with friends, my partner or family, it’s still very much a happy place. I also love being by the sea, having lived in Barcelona and lived in Bournemouth for University many years ago, having a beach close by was always so calming.

Do you have any summer traditions you do each year to mark the season’s arrival?
I usually have a wardrobe clear out and refresh, looking through my favourites and adding a few new items to prepare for the season.

What scent do you most associate with summer?
Prada's Paradoxel and Jo Malone Wild Bluebell.

Is there a song that summarises summer for you?
"Candy" by Cameo, I love this song so much when I am with family or a big group of friends, I always get everyone dancing to this, and the routine is so easy to follow along, making it really fun. Other than this, I love a range of music, I love listening to old songs from Jhene Aiko, Frank Ocean and love reggaeton so much from living in Barcelona, I also cannot get enough of Bad Bunny.

Is there something you want to do or try this summer that you haven’t before?
I would love to try snorkelling, which I might get to do later this year when in Santorini.

I always still think of The O.C.! It seemed like the most full-time summery place that made me dream of living by the ocean from my early teens. I moved to Sydney when I was 24, so perhaps that was my inspo!

Do you have any summer memories that you find yourself returning to each year?
I had family in Cassis (in the South of France) growing up, so we would often visit them over summer, and I remember doing the hike in the Calanques to get to the best beaches, which aren't accessible by car. So for me, summer always has somewhat of an adventure element, exploring and finding the best spots with the reward of crystal clear waters at the end.

Do you have any summer traditions you do each year to mark the season’s arrival?
My birthday is on the first day of summer, so this is always the official kick-off for me.

What scent do you most associate with summer?
Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess is truly like summer in a bottle! It's a mix of sun, SPF and warm neroli, like walking to the beach on holiday.

Can you tell me what your perfect summer’s day looks like?
I’m from Finland, the land of thousands of lakes, so a sauna and a dip in the water are basically in our DNA, no matter the weather. My ideal summer's day would be spent at a summer house with friends, swimming, taking our time to cook dinner, sipping fresh drinks, playing card games and just relaxing. No makeup and cosy clothes; perhaps a nice cotton set.

What recipes do you turn to once the weather warms?
Grilled cabbage with a zingy vinaigrette—honey, chilli, herbs and garlic—is a summer staple in my family. Also, a big prawn paella with saffron. We’ve been perfecting the recipe for a few summers now and it just keeps getting better.

Where will you be spending your summer?
I just got back from a family road trip in Italy, from Rome down to the Amalfi Coast and Puglia. I also did a quick girls’ trip to London in June to see Beyoncé—she was spectacular, as always. For the rest of the summer, I’m planning to stay in Finland, hopping from one summer cabin to another.

What's on your summer reading list?
I like holiday books that are fast-paced and easy, but with a psychological twist, like Yellowface by Rebecca F. Kuang and My Husband by Maud Ventura. The Girls by Emma Cline is very summery, even if the mood is so dark. I also love biographies, like Tara Westover’s Educated or Demi Moore’s memoir.

Which films, TV shows or other cultural moments sum up summer for you?
Re-watching Sex and the City is such a summer vibe! Also, The Talented Mr. Ripley (the 1999 version) has the best summer fashion. And of course, Love Island UK—we’re two weeks behind in Finland, so I try hard not to see any spoilers.

Is there a song that summarises summer for you?
My summer playlist is so mixed: I love a good car karaoke with old '00s R&B and radio sing-along hits, Italo disco or some oldies and goldies like the Bee Gees, ABBA and Earth, Wind & Fire—anything that instantly gets me in a goofy, dancing mood. We also love to play a car DJ game where everyone takes turns picking the next song, rating each other's picks.

Can you tell me what your perfect summer’s day looks like?
My perfect summer's day starts early with an early dog walk and grabbing an iced coffee or matcha. This is my form of meditation, and a great way to start the day. I love seeing animals in the park; it honestly brightens up my day before I need to sit down with my laptop as a private jeweller. I am always wearing linen in the summer; I'm a big fan of a linen shirt, either from H&M or With Nothing Underneath, and some denim or cotton shorts. When it comes to food, it’s all about in-season fruits like strawberries and cherries, and fresh salads. In the heat, I like to keep things fresh and light. Hydration is key!

What recipes do you turn to once the weather warms?
I love a watermelon salad or a tomato toast situation. I am not a big cook, but I love simple recipes. I just got the new Wishbone Kitchen cookbook, and there are plenty of recipes I can't wait to test out in it.

Where will you be spending your summer?
This summer, I'll hopefully be heading back to Sri Lanka. I haven't been in a while, but it's where I grew up, so I can't wait to see friends and family, but also be a little bit of a beach bum and enjoy the yummy food and the gorgeous weather, and live my best island-girl life.

What's on your summer reading list?
In anticipation of the season three release this summer, I've been listening to The Summer I Turned Pretty (I'm team Conrad, obviously). I'm in the mood for a bit of mystery, and None of This Is True by Lisa Jewell was recommended to me.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is the perfect warm-weather TV show. Oh, and Mamma Mia! is a great summer movie.

Do you have any summer memories that you find yourself returning to each year?
The summer memories I always go back to are the long summer holidays I had as a teenager, during school and university. The carefree joy of being free and young, and just enjoying the simple things. iPhones were not around, and it was just about being present and finding things to do. Things were simpler back then—it was magical. I spent a lot of time in Sri Lanka by the beach with friends. How I wish we could go back to those days.

Do you have any summer traditions you always do to mark the season’s arrival?
My friend group's birthdays are all in the summer, so, from the last week of May, there is a birthday or two per month. That's always how the summer starts for me. Plus, my own birthday!

What scent do you most associate with summer?
Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede, and Chanel Chance. These two fragrances take me back to happy summer memories.

Anything Spice Girls or Britney! And right now, I am obsessed with Olivia Dean.

Can you tell me what your perfect summer’s day looks like?
My perfect summer’s day are definitely a day where there is no rush, when I can wake up, do my daily at-home pilates session, drink my morning coffee somewhere with a nice view and lay in the sun and read my book. I love to get lost in books and what’s so great about summer is that you actually have the time to read for hours. Then in the evening I love to dress up, walk into town and have dinner. I love to wear white, light and easy dresses and skirts in the summer. Anything you can just throw on without giving it so much thought.

What recipes do you turn to once the weather warms?
The ultimate summer dessert for me are strawberries with heavy cream and sugar. It’s something I have been eating since I was a child.

Where will you be spending your summer?
I actually have quite a few travel plans this summer. First, my boyfriend and I are headed to Albania. We have booked a beautiful hotel on a cliff with a private beach and rooms overlooking the sea. Then we’re travelling to visit family in North Norway for some long-awaited quality time with slow days and late nights fishing under the midnight sun. Then, to round off the summer, I have a fun girls' trip to St.Tropez to celebrate my friend’s birthday.

What's on your summer reading list?
I have recently gotten into the hype of Sarah J.Mass's books, and these days I am finishing the last book in the Throne of Glass series. Then I think I will go on to read A Court of Thorns and Roses. I also love to read non-fiction and would like to read Mel Robbins' Let Them.

I am a huge nostalgic and love to watch older films or films that have an older feel to them. My go-to summer films are Call Me by Your Name, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Dirty Dancing and The Parent Trap.

Do you have any summer memories that you find yourself returning to each year?
Growing up in the North of Norway, I'm used to unpredictable summer weather. I have a lot of memories of getting to the beach to take a swim, and then in the blink of an eye, the sky's turned grey and it's started to pour. Often, we ended up eating our beach snacks in the car while the rain was pouring down and going on a road trip instead. These moments have ended up as dear memories looking back.

Do you have any summer traditions you do each year to mark the season’s arrival?
My birthday is in June, so for me, gathering my friends for a little birthday celebration has always marked the beginning of summer.

The fresh and salty smell of the ocean and newly cut grass are summer for me.

Can you tell me what your perfect summer’s day looks like?
The Kenwood Ladies' Pond in Hampstead is a favourite spot of mine, so I’m definitely going to pop there on a hot summer’s day—it’s like a mystical female wonderland!

What recipes do you turn to once the weather warms?
Whenever I visit Towpath, I always want to eat everything on the menu. I’ve now bought the cookbook, so I’m excited to try and re-create some of the dishes, like the iconic Tomato Tonnato. I’m also really into my breakfasts at the moment. Over the most recent bank holiday, I poached loads of pears and made plum compote and granola. I’m having that trio each morning with coconut yoghurt and almond butter, which is definitely an incentive to get out of bed each day.

Where will you be spending your summer?
​My summer trips are being cut short a bit due to my pregnancy; however, I’ve started Euro summer early, visiting Hotel Corazon and Meem Townhouse in Mallorca, Les Roches Rouges in the South of France and Mykonos with boutique agency The Cycladist. We're doing one final trip as a babymoon to one of the Moroseta villas in Puglia. I’d love to sneak in some late summer sun, perhaps at Borgo Tre in Lake Garda or Villa Magnan in Biarritz. As I’ll be in the UK for much of my summer, I’m also looking forward to spending time in and around Bruton. I just wrote a Substack guide on the area because there's a never-ending supply of amazing restaurants and things to do.

What will your summer days look like?
I just had an amazing meal at One Club Row, so I definitely need to go back and try more of the menu. It’s got a sexy New York City vibe—the type of place that makes you want to drink a martini, so I must return post-pregnancy! I’m really excited about Canal in Westbourne Park—a new opening from one of my favourite restaurant groups. I’ve also got my eye on Sol’s for drinks and small plates in the sun, and St. Clair for coffee. I love that Italo, which is local to me, is now open for dinner a few nights a week. It feels like you’re on holiday when you go there.

What's on your summer reading list?
Like many of us, I’m dabbling in the world of fantasy, and I’m currently making my way through the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. It’s actually my first foray into fantasy, and I can totally understand the escapism it offers. Summer calls for easy reads, and next on my list will be the latest releases from Taylor Jenkins Reid and Emily Henry, two of my literary fiction faves. I’m due later this summer, so I’ll be juggling my reads with birthing books such as Ina May Gaskin’s Guide to Childbirth.

Do you have any summer memories that you find yourself returning to each year?
I’m sad not to be attending Glastonbury, as I went last year and had the best time. This summer, I’ll be watching from my sofa! I got some late September sun in 2024 on the Amalfi Coast, which is just the epitome of summer. We had the best meal at the Belmond Caruso in Ravello and stayed at Le Sirenuse and Hotel Santa Caterina, which were both divine.

In its place, we're seeing clothes with a little more bite. A little more you, perhaps. As I sat back and absorbed the season in full, one sentiment came to mind: fashion feels alive again.

"Autumn/winter 2025 was an incredibly exciting season, marked by a fresh wave of creativity from established brands and the debut of several new creative directors," says Kay Barron, Fashion Director at Net-a-Porter. "The collections all felt very powerful; they exuded boldness, drama and confidence, with a strong sense of originality throughout. The following trends not only stood out but felt elevated and more refined than in previous years."

Barron's words encapsulate it perfectly. There's energy in the air and it's coming from the top. A new generation of creative directors—think Matthieu Blazy at Chanel, Sarah Burton at Givenchy and Pierpaolo Piccioli at Balenciaga—is ushering in a mood shift; one that trades the careful curation of perfection for character, emotion and flair. And I don't think it's a coincidence that this season's most pervasive inspiration came not from minimalism or modernism, but from the 1980s.

Yes, the '80s are back—again—but this time with sharper intent. You could feel the decade pulsing beneath the surface in so many ways: pirate-style boots that looked plucked from Adam Ant's tour wardrobe, plush faux furs in brazen hues and glitzy power dresses with more sparkle than subtlety. The designers weren't being ironic. They were indulging in the sheer boldness of the era. Why? Nostalgia, certainly—a craving for familiarity in unfamiliar times. When the world around us feels like it's spiralling, the '80s offer an anchor: a decade that wasn't afraid to be loud, proud and sure of itself.

Still, this wasn't just retro for retro's sake. The nod to the '80s made way for something deeper—a renaissance in power dressing. This season, the concept evolved. No longer restricted to stiff tailoring or plain suiting, power came through in nuanced ways. Shoulders remained a focal point, but they framed softer silhouettes, while suiting was reimagined in sumptuous fabrics. The rise of the knee-length skirt—neither mini nor maxi, but somewhere determinedly in between—spoke volumes. Long overlooked, the knee skirt made a compelling return, worn with matching blazers or well-chosen knitwear. It's arguably the most professional hemline out there, but it no longer feels corporate. "I spend way too much time on social media, so obviously this trend immediately reminded me of the #frazzledenglishwoman hashtag on TikTok," says Who What Wear UK's social media editor Megan Storey. "Search it and you'll see a stream of videos from the last three years of people discussing and dissecting the aesthetic. Users on the platform reference British film characters from the '00s (Bridget Jones possibly being the most iconic) and deem essentials of the look to be big scarves, long coats, a hodgepodge of layers and a general bedraggled energy. Sound familiar? Shift to autumn/winter 2025 and this aesthetic has bubbled up to the runways (with a slightly polished edge). Whilst Miu Miu is giving "I layered three things from my floordrobe and it works", Valentino saw models in 'borrowed from my boyfriend' tweed blazers. Fashion's appetite for structure has softened, quite literally. Squishy, huggable bags were everywhere on the autumn/winter 2025 runways, from buttery clutches at Tod's to slouchy top-handles at Louis Vuitton and Fendi.

"These days, I rarely buy into trends and prefer to live by the philosophy of 'buy less, buy better.' Still, I always keep an eye on the handbag styles poised to make an impact each season and, for autumn/winter 2025, the standout trend to note when it comes to accessories is soft, supple and squishy bags," says Who What Wear UK's managing editor Poppy Nash.

"After years of favouring sleek, structured designs, the fashion set's growing love for all things boho is starting to influence accessories. Now, we're ushering in uber-relaxed silhouettes and suppler fabrics like suede that feel cooler than ever before, signalling a move away from quiet luxury and towards a more laid-back nonchalance. On the runways, we saw this mostly in the form of clutches, with slouchy styles at Tod's and Balmain carried under the arm, but also in folded top-handle styles at Giorgio Armani and via a makeover of the classic tote and shoulder bag by Gabriella Hearst and Fendi, which for A/W 2025 are being offered up in supple suede and jumbo sizes. 3. All Things Furry

Faux fur has been on the fashion periphery for a few seasons now owing to the rise in popularity of quiet, pared-back outerwear. Now, however, for autumn/winter 2025, it's reasserting itself. From Chloé's oversized scarf collars to the glossy brown coats at Fendi, fur textures (faux, of course) were everywhere.

"This season, faux fur and shearling accents were consistent throughout the runways. While these textures are to be expected for autumn/winter 2025, they truly dominated this season—appearing both as full faux looks and subtle trims," notes Barron. "With the trend expanding into categories including accessories and footwear, this offers consumers a more accessible way to buy into a trend."

"It's not just adored Michelle Pfeiffer's Elvira Hancock in Scarface, Alexa Demie's Maddy in Euphoria or Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones in Sex and The City—faux fur silhouettes have been labelled de rigueur by the designer set after years of being seen as taboo," says Who What Wear UK's SEO writer Ava Gilchrist. "But as the autumn/winter 2025 runways proved, fluffy garments will always be a symbol of a bygone era of bohemia and sophistication. At Miu Miu, where cloche hats and pencil skirts dominated, furry pieces took a more vintage feel in the format of shawls and scarfs craned in the crook of model's elbows, evoking the sense of austerity synonymous with New York in the 1920s. At Chloé, Chemena Kamali continued to embrace the hedonism of the 1970s, albeit with a bit of an early 2000s feel, as the brand's iconic Paddington bag was accented with vegan fox tail charms. 5. Back to Brown

If you're craving colour this winter but find black a little too heavy and camel a little too safe, then brown is your answer. Yes, it's been around for a while now but to deny its impact on autumn/winter 2025's fashion trends would be a disservice to you.

"Rich mocha, chocolate hues, and deep mahogany shades were all over the catwalks this season," says Who What Wear UK's acting fashion editor Sophie Robyn Watson. What is key to note here is the styling technique—to tap into the luxury appeal of brown hues, you really have to commit to the bit. We really are in the era of food-related trends, so burnt caramel, cocoa, and espresso colours, particularly when worn in a monochromatic fashion, will always look chic and expensive."

6. Buccaneer Boots

Slouchy, swaggering and unapologetically nostalgic; this season's pirate-style boots looked like they were pulled straight from Adam Ant's dressing room or the abandoned costume cupboard from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. What struck me most, however, was just how widespread they were and the various treatments they were given, from Zimmermann's romantic styling to Ralph Lauren's equestrian spin and Balmain's glam interpretation

"There was something very '80s about the sheer volume of buckled, knee-high and slouch-fit boots on the runway," says Who What Wear UK's senior shopping editor Marina Avraam. "It's part costume, part cool—and when paired with floaty minis or tucked-in trousers, they become a true statement." If there's one trend that clearly aligns with the renewed 1980s energy running through the season, it's this. Statement shoulders—whether exaggerated, padded or sharply tailored—have made their way back into every corner of the wardrobe. "Power dressing emerged as a major trend yet again, with strong shoulders making a return to the runway," says Barron. "Grace Jones could be seen as the ultimate muse with bold silhouettes in everything from blazers and dresses to blouses and outerwear and many collections drew clear reference from the power dressing of the '80s and '90s. Despite the statement making structure, the styling felt modern and versatile, making the trend feel both impactful and wearable."

"We all know that fashion tends to repeat itself, but I never thought I'd see (and absolutely love might I add) exaggerated shoulders on the autumn/winter 2025 runway," says Who What Wear UK's editorial assistant, Brittany Davy. "From billowy boho blouses at Chloé to sharp tailoring at Givenchy, every designer found a unique way to pay homage to this '80s trend, proving that you can bring a hint of power dressing to your outfit no matter the aesthetic. Just think of the broader, more structured silhouettes that fashion icons such as Princess Diana and Whitney Houston championed at this time, but to make it feel more 2025, take a cue from designers and balance them out with a more slim-fitted choice of bottom."

8. Bad Romance

Every so often, a trend comes along that makes you feel something and Bad Romance is exactly that. It toes the line between darkness and delicacy, offering looks that blend gothic styling with the sort of romantic visuals you usually only see in period dramas.

Designers including Chanel, McQueen and Dior explored moody textures, sheer netting and flashes of skin—think corsetry with capes, black satin dresses with bondage-adjacent details, sultry lace gloves with floor-length velvet. Knowing what to reveal and, indeed, what to conceal is key here.

"This trend utilises the theme of contrast in the most compelling way," says Who What Wear UK's assistant social media editor Annie Wheatland-Clinch. "Lace worn with leather and silhouettes that feel risqué then paired with more modest garments, it's both tough and tender."

9. Maxi Coats

There's something about a coat that brushes the ankle that makes you feel like you've got your life together (even when it's far from the truth). A/W 2025 confirmed the return of the maxi coat in every sense of the word. Structured silhouettes with sweeping hems ruled the runways, with notable iterations at Victoria Beckham, Ferragamo and Max Mara.

"This season, outerwear took centre stage with a strong focus on proportions and in particular, lengths," confirms Barron. "At Stella McCartney, a standout camel coat wasn't just part of the outfit—it was the entire look."

Autumn/winter 2025's coats marked a shift from relaxed shapes to something a little more composed. "The overarching trend this season is a more form-fitting, structured silhouette that still maintains an oversized appeal," says Who What Wear UK's junior fashion editor Imani-Nia Francis-Tsolaki. "Chloé reimagines the maxi with a bold fur trim and puffed sleeves, while Ferragamo delivered a double-breasted intricately pinstriped moment that channels dandyism at its best and had my jaw on the floor." It turns out the secret to pulling together any winter outfit might just be the oldest accessory in the book: the belt. But for A/W 2025, forget subtle waist-cinchers—this season's belts are big, bold and, in many cases, piled high.

"I'm completely here for the return of statement belts—they're such a simple way to elevate a look," says Who What Wear UK's junior branded content editor Humaa Hussain. "After last year's viral 'Mob Wife' trend adopting leopard print in a way that felt supremely reminiscent of the late '90s and early '00s, this season is showcasing a much refined iteration. Think Dalmatian-spotted coats à la Jackie Kennedy from No.21, shearling at Zimmermann and sheer blouses at Saint Laurent."

Structure was also key here. "It's worth noting that strong silhouettes created by big, structured shoulders appear to be a micro-trend taking place within this one," they add. "And as is often the case with animal prints, texture is key. The message is clear: if you want to nail power dress, look to those powerful members of the animal kingdom."

12. Velvet Moment

Velvet always has a moment around this time of year, but for A/W 2025, its comeback feels more compelling than ever. Rich jewel tones, luxe draping and ornate finishes gave it new meaning.

"For me, one of the most distinct shifts from summer into the autumn months comes in the form of a textural update. Light linens and airy cottons are set aside for more sumptuous fabrics, and this year it's all about velvet," says Who What Wear UK shopping editor Florrie Alexander. "From elegant draped dresses at Zimmermann to sharp tailoring at Burberry, this rich fabric is bringing depth to our cold weather looks. For 2025, this luxurious finish is working in tandem with deep hues of burgundy, forest green and navy, with a tactile flair that makes even our most classic buys feel brand new."

At Bottega Veneta, Mattieu Blazy designed leather totes that rival the designs of plastic shopping bags. Indeed, rope accessories are on the rise this year. What Is the Rope Accessory Trend?

The rope accessory trend owes its origins to Miuccia Prada who, for Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2024 collection, paraded a series of twine trinkets down the Paris Fashion Week catwalk. “Prototypical ideas of clothing hold significance,” the luxury brand wrote at the time in the collection presentation’s accompanying press release. To translate, Miu Miu showcased a range that reversed pieces to their essence.
